This document we are not going to translate into English because of it’s too big. Actually this Specifications describe requirements to plant material of most of fruits and berries crops. For us, meanwhile, there is no need to read all this paper, and we will focus only on main parameters of seabuckthorn.
Root development:
Number of main roots on two-years plants of first grade – 7 pcs., second grade – 4 pcs. As regards one-year plants – 4 and 3 respectively. Here one comment is necessary… you should know that structure of root system of one-year seabuckthorn plant obtained from green cuttings is mostly fibrous. That is why regulation of numbers of main roots for one year plants from our point of view is not correct.
Length of main roots on two-years plants of first grade – 35 cm, second grade – 25 cm. As regards one-year plants – 20 and 15 cm respectively. And again some comments are necessary. For instance the Standard for two years plants mentions that length of the roots is 35 cm – most likely meaning that plants should have 7 roots of 35 cm each (but not the sum of 7 roots is 35 cm totally). Actually such parameters are quite easy to obtain (look at the picture above). At the same time to obtain one-year plants which have 4 roots of 20 cm each is too difficult. The pictures below demonstrate the highest level quality for one year plants, which obtained from green cuttings and as you can see it is hard to find 4 roots of 20 cm each. Meanwhile the plants represented on the pictures are of a top quality. Probably the mentioned parameter means sum of the lengths (4 roots per 5 cm each). Such results are easy to obtain and our plants referring to as second grade are even better than Standard requirement for first grade one.
Upper part of plants:
Number of sprouts for two-year plants – 3 for first grade, and with no regulations for second grade. For one year plants – 2 for the first grade and no regulations for the second grade. It is absolutely necessary to add some comments to this item of the Standard… Actually there are no any problems with two-years plants, but for one-year plants – it’s not possible to obtain. The point is seabuckthorn plants from green cuttings are mostly have no additional growth in first year, and forming mainly root system. That is why to obtain two sprouts in first year is out of plant nature!!! Of course it could be possible that Standard here means that plants are obtained from wood cuttings, but in this case that is absolutely different story. Picture below shows one-year plants, obtained from wood cuttings, and as you can see they more suit to two-years plant requirements. If you will try to grow them for second year the plant material could be far beyond the Standard requests.
Length of upper part of two-year plants – 60 cm for the first grade and 40 cm for the second one. As regards one-year plants – is 35 and 30 cm respectively. It is interesting to know that because of unexplainable reasons they low down the requirements to 30 and 25 cm for Siberia region. Moreover, for so called slow growing varieties the requirements are completely low – 25 and 20 cm respectively. Taking into consideration that during green cutting we prepare sprouts of 35-40 cm as minimum length, our plants meet the requirements completely. As usual one-year plants, offering by us, is about of 40 cm length.
As regards the rest items of the Standard they have no significant meaning for quality evaluation and because of that we skip their discussion.
