Mainly engaged in the research projects of seabuckthorn plantation and development, ecological engineering, soil and water conservation, as well as programme officer and training specialist in agro-forestry of other organizations in the part time.
The following application, research and training assignments were undertaken:
2005-present
Project applicant, researcher, training specialist of ICRTS and also the Ministry of Water Resources (MWR), Project of Seabuckthorn Planting in the Sandstone Areas of Adjacent Border of Shanxi, Shaanxi and Inner Mongolia (PSPSA).
The project is located in the adjacent areas of Shanxi, Shaanxi, and Inner Mongolia for planting seabuckthorn in the sandstone areas for soil and water conservation, and following development in beverage, healthcare, pharmaceutical and cosmetics. In the processing of the project, some research works are being done by Prof. Hu and his colleagues in new species introduction, hybrid test, community study, ecological benefits supervising, etc. At the same time, as the director of the Department of Science and Technology Cooperation of the ICRTS, Prof. Hu is engaging in the research field of plant development of functional food, etc. Some good varieties of seabuckthorn have been gotten in semi-arid areas of China for both ecological and economic uses.
2001-2004
Project applicant, researcher, training specialist of the State Forestry Administration (SFA), Project of Converting Cropland into Forestland and Grassland (CCFG).
The project is located in Datong County, Qinghai Province, which is one of the 6 experimental counties of the CCFG in China. Prof. Hu was appointed as the county magistrate in charge of the CCFG by both SFA and Xining Peoples Government, Qinghai Province. He not only attended the organization and planning of CCFG, but also taught the courses about rehabilitation, silviculture and breeding from 2001 to 2003. More than 4000 hectare cropland has conversed into forest and grassland under the leadership of local government and his participation since 2001. Some useful patterns about agro-forestry are established in the project areas and have created good results both in ecology and economy.
1997-2001
Project applicant, researcher, training specialist, and also the project chief of the National 948 Project.
The projects is located mainly in Gansu, Shaanxi, Shanxi province, and covered more wide areas including Qinghai, Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, Henan and other provinces in the Loess Plateau. Prof. Hu, the project chief, have introduced 15 plants for soil and water conservation from USA according to the Similarity of Climate. 6 herbage have proved to be successful in the areas and a lot of patterns of agro-forestry have set up in the areas for eco-economical objectives, such as the model of rotation of Leguminosae and crops, the model of intercropping of Leguminosae and fruit trees, the model of intercropping of Leguminosae and forest trees.
